18 cities with the most Michelin stars in the world

When the Michelin guide awards restaurants with stars, they are split into three categories: One means "worth a stop", two means "worth a detour," while the highest accolade — three stars — means "worth a special trip."
It's safe to assume, then, that anywhere with more than 225 Michelin-starred restaurants is definitely worth planning a holiday around.
We've teamed up with the Michelin Guide to rank the most-starred cities in the world.
While Japan is leading the way in culinary tourism, with four cities in the country sharing a total of 557 stars between 429 restaurants — European capitals like London and Paris are still highly respected foodie destinations.
From Molecular gastronomy in Chicago to Fugu in Tokyo, here are 18 cities with the most Michelin stars in the world.
Note: The most-starred cities were calculated by looking at the most recent Michelin ratings for restaurants in every destination and the number of stars each venue has received.

15. Madrid, Spain — 21 stars

One star: 8
Madrid has 14 Michelin-starred restaurants, and tied in last place with Rome. It is still one of the top European foodie destinations, with six restaurants receiving at least two stars. Diver xois its only three-star restaurant serving experimental, contemporary cuisine.

18 restaurants in Rome have been awarded a total of 21 stars. The most respected is La Pergola, which has the top accolade of three stars.

Four Japanese cities make it into our ranking, including Nara, which is around one hour away from Kyoto and Osaka and is home to 16 Michelin-grade restaurants. Helmed by head chef Nobuharu Yamamura, Wa Yamamura — a small kaiseki restaurant(serving a series of small, traditional dishes) has three Michelin stars.

Two Belgian cities make it into our list, including Antwerp, which has 17 Michelin-starred restaurants. The Jane, which is run by head chef Nick Brill, currently holds two stars.

14. Milan, Italy — 22 stars

One star: 12
Milan is Italy's most-starred city, with 22 stars awarded to 17 restaurants. One of the best is Cracco, a two-star restaurant serving modern twists on Italian classics like this "egg spaghetti."

13. Macau, China — 24 stars

One star: 10
Macau is famous for its casinos and gambling tourism, but it is also home to some of the world's finest restaurants, with 16 being awarded at least one star. The Eight — which offers traditional Chinese cuisine playfully presented — is one of the city's best places to eat, and currently holds three Michelin stars. 

12. Berlin, Germany — 26 stars

Berlin attracts famous chefs from all over the world, and currently hosts 19 Michelin-starred eateries. One of the best is the two-star Restaurant Tim Raue, which serves up western dishes heavily influenced by Asian flavours. 

11. Barcelona, Spain — 30 stars

One star: 21
Barcelona continues to lead the way as the most Michelin-starred city in Spain, with 25 Michelin-starred restaurants. Lasarte, which focuses on bold presentation and contemporary cooking, is its only three-star venue. 

10. Brussels, Belgium — 31 stars

One star: 21
Brussels has no three star restaurants, but with 26 restaurants holding at least one star, it is still one of the top foodie destinations in Europe. Sea Grill, which specialises in seafood, is one of the best in the city.

9. Chicago, USA — 35 stars

One star: 19
Chicago just makes it into the top 10, with 26 top restaurants. One of its best-known venues is Alinea, an innovative restaurant which specialises in molecular gastronomy and was featured on the Netflix original series "Chef's Table." it features a 20-course tasting menu where the dessert is served on the table itself.

8. San Francisco, USA — 46 stars

One star: 25
San Francisco has no shortage of fine dining options, with a total of 34 Michelin starred restaurants. One of these is Saison, which serves refined, modern cuisine in a casual setting.

7 London, UK — 79 stars

Two stars: 9
One star: 55
London is known for hosting the UK's best restaurants, and 66 hold one michelin star or more. Award-winning chefs like Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal and Michel Roux Jr all have Michelin-starred outposts here, including Ramsay's flagship venue Restaurant Gordon Ramsayin Chelsea.

6. Hong Kong, China — 87 stars

One star: 41
Hong Kong's reputation as one of the world's financial hubs mean there is plenty of demand for upscale dining and cuisine from all over the world, and 61 restaurants hold at least one star. Amber — a two-star restaurant which made it into the 50 best restaurants ranking, is run by Dutch head chef Richard Ekkebus, who serves contemporary cooking.

5. New York City, USA — 99 stars

One star: 61
New York is the most Michelin-starred US city, with 77 restaurants receiving awards. Six of its restaurants have been awarded the top accolade of three stars for the 2017 Michelin guide. Eleven Madison Park has one of the biggest reputations in the city, and came third in the World's 50 Best Restaurants 2016.

4. Osaka, Japan — 117 stars

One star: 68
 Japan is rapidly becoming the world's top food destination, with three of its major cities making it into the top five alone. The city is home to 91 Michelin-starred restaurants. One of the best is Taian, which has three stars and serves decadent takes on Japanese food like this wagyu beef and red wine braised pork.

3. Paris, France — 134 stars

Paris is the foodie capital of Europe. The city is now home to 100 Michelin-starred restaurants since the Michelin updated its Paris guide for 2017. One of the most revered places to eat is L'Arpège, a classically french restaurant which came 19th in this year's The World's 50 Best Restaurants ranking.

2. Kyoto, Japan — 135 stars

One star: 64
Kyoto is home to some of the oldest restaurants in the world. There are 96 restaurants holding at least one star, and seven establishments currently hold three Michelin stars including Hyo tei, which has been serving traditional Japanese cuisine since the 17th century.

When it comes to reputations, Tokyo is the food capital of the world, with more than 225 restaurants holding at least one Michelin star. Usuki Fugu Yamadaya is one of Tokyo's most revered restaurants, with three stars to its name. It specialises in Fugu, which can be deadly if it's not prepared correctly.
